1.  The case originated in an application (no. 30471/08) against the Republic of Turkey lodged with the Court under Article 34 of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms (“the Convention”) by two Iranian nationals, Mr Mohsen Abdolkhani and Mr Hamid Karimnia (“the applicants”), on 30 June 2008.

(Lack of) Social Security of Asylum Seekers and Refugees in Turkey

Asylum seekers andrefugees who came to Turkey from countries outside Europe are excluded from social insurance coverage which forms the most important part of social security system. Foreigners transiting to a third country whose asylum application was accepted by Turkey does not practically have the possibility to work. Asylum seekers who do not work legally and thus pay social insurance premiums remain excluded from social insurance coverage.

EU mulls immigration burden-sharing

According to a European Commission proposal leaked to the press, EU members would pledge to take in a certain number of refugees each year, alleviating the burden placed on Malta, Italy and Spain, where most illegal immigrants first arrive on European soil.

EU members would annually pledge how many people they would be ready to admit, rather than making case-by-case decisions as with the recent acceptance of Iraqi refugees from Syria and Jordan, according to proposals obtained by Reuters. The countries would receive EU funds to help with resettlement.
